We’ve noticed that the Imperial War Museum has released a Poster Application, perfect for all War / Poster enthusiasts. In the IWM collection of 20,000 posters they have selected 30 from the Second World War.

Some are famous pieces that can still be spotted around most design studios today, maybe it be a mug or a mouse mat, such as the famous ‘Keep Calm And Carry On’ poster produced by the British Government in 1939 in the anticipation of the air raids.

Other posters in the collection are rare and unseen by many people. These posters may have only caught the eyes of true War enthusiasts.

It’s edging nearer and nearer to Christmas day, and if your undecided about presents why not get a beautiful London transport museum poster, there’s 5,000 so you shouldn’t be too stuck on picking one to choose also they have been produced from 1900 to the present day.

While searching on the internet the other day, I was literally blown away by the beauty of Charley Harper’s work and really sad I had not discovered this marvellous artist sooner.

Harper was an American Modernist artist, who was best know for his specific design style of producing wildlife prints, posters and book illustrations. After passing in 2007, he has left a legacy of prints, that can be enjoyed and talked about for years to come.

The simplicity and beauty of his prints makes them so appealing, and the wide range of different species is fascinating. I am particularly fond of the the piece with several images produced for ‘The Giant Golden Book of Biology’, first image posted in this blog.

We really hope you enjoy, I will be purchasing some of his stuff, website below!

I thought I would share a useful bit of code I recently used when building a wordpress site. I found myself embedding text, for example home page text or footer text in the theme files. This is fine if the text is not going to be edited, but if the client would like constant ability to edit this text then we need to create a page for this.

I created a page called ‘home page text’ in the admin and set this to be not indexed by search engines as this will just be for text fed through to another page.

This following code retrieves page data when you specify a given a page ID.

<?php
$page_id = 123; // 123 should be replaced with a specific Page's id from your site, which you can find by mousing over the link to edit that Page on the Manage Pages admin page. The id will be embedded in the query string of the URL, e.g. page.php?action=edit&post=123.
$page_data = get_page( $page_id ); // You must pass in a variable to the get_page function. If you pass in a value (e.g. get_page ( 123 ); ), WordPress will generate an error.

$content = apply_filters('the_content', $page_data->post_content); // Get Content and retain Wordpress filters such as paragraph tags. Origin from: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/get_pagepost-and-no-paragraphs-problem
$title = $page_data->post_title; // Get title
?>

The shortened version of this code could be used like this:

<?php
$title = $page_data->post_title;

Recently I’ve been following the work of young creative Illustrator and Art Director Saad Moosajee. British born Saad who now resides in America has an immense portfolio of top client work for such companies as Nike, Oxfam Australia, Nokia and Tiger Beer, just to name a few.

He has also already had exhibitions in Sydney and his home town of London, England. He mostly works in 2D and 3D design, and has even stated that that his drawing skills are not that great, but he also says, that this is to change. He has a lot of respect for artists that have skills traditionally outside of the computer, and that he would like to develop his free hand skills. In a previous interview he has also mentioned he would like to attend a design school, instead of taking on a freelance position.

His main inspirations come from the work of artists H.R Giger and Rene Magritte. When he was young he would buy album covers simply if they look nice, and not for what the music was like inside.

Keep following Saad Moosajee, because no doubt his portfolio will keep growing, and will always continue to amaze.

While shopping for pantone Christmas gifts last week, this wonderful hotel popped up, I had briefly heard about a pantone inspired hotel in Brussels. Sounds like a true designers delight (or nightmare), and possibly well worth a trip solely for the true pantone experience. In this age of Pop up designer boutique hotels I think this could be one niche that could well take off.

The Pantone Hotel invites you to experience the city of Brussels through a lens of color and a spectrum of comforts. From the moment you arrive, their “hotel of colours” will awaken your senses to an array of delights and playful surprises.

Impeccably designed by Michel Penneman and Olivier Hannaert, The Pantone Hotel showcases the colour of emotion with a distinctive hue on each coloured guest floor. From vivid to subdued, for business or leisure, their unique boutique hotel perfectly suits your savvy palette and colourful imagination.

From a design perspective, The Pantone Hotel is built on an exceptional use of contrast; a white canvas provides clean space for saturated colours to pop. Guest rooms feature unique photography by esteemed Belgian photographer Victor Levy.

Welcome to the center of the colour universe.

Lygia Pape clearly had an oral fixation. The Brazilian artist, who died in 2004, was a founding member of her country’s Neo-Concrete movement, which took the work of abstract European modernists and injected it with a dose of touchy-feely sensuality. For Pape, this celebration of the physical found its locus in the mouth.

A film of a giant open mouth confronts you as you enter this survey of Pape’s work from the 1950′s to the 1970′s. Framed by a beard, it sucks a huge lozenge, or lazily blows smoke. At one point, the lips contract and the tongue squeezes through the moist, wrinkly hole. This is intercut with a beardless mouth sucking something long and fleshy. All to the funky rhythm of 1970′s muzak. It’s art masquerading as cheesy 1970′s porn, or perhaps the other way around. The film is called Eat Me, but all around there are other kinds of imbibing and ingesting going on. There is a theme of rebirthing, too, as Pape emerges head-first from a box. If you’re not a chilled-out child of the 1960s, this might strike you as a bit irritating. Other work, which revisits Mondrian and Van Doesburg, is visually pleasing but not much more.

As a life-time survey, this exhibition feels thin, though the theatrical installation that greets you in the dark, which appears as golden shafts of light striking the ground (in fact they’re gold threads), is rather lovely.
